Thumbs down I detest learning things the hard way!

yes marvelux does the aforementioned thing you quickly learn to ease the spoon in to warm it upwards.
information technology's the best way to go in a closed enironment though,i employ marelux when smelting and stir information technology in with a stick.

Some other reason I use Kitty Litter.
Haven't had a visit from the Tinsel Fairy since I started.

I got nearly 70 lbs of floor dry in my store, is that what kitty litter is made of? Been thinking of trying it equally a flux, it looks like stale bits of clay.

Yeah, that's exactly what happened. That fluxing compound is hygroscopic, and will absorb water from boiling air.

Why terminate using it? Keep using it-- there is nada incorrect with it. If you can larn to pour molten metal safely, you can learn to employ diverse fluxing componds safely. Your "learning experience" was that you used a dirty spoon with fluxing residuum on it. But don't repeat that.

Adjacent time be sure to remove all the fluxing balance from the spoon. Cleanliness is adjacent to etc etc. I have used the Marvelux-type fluxes, but personally I'd much rather use quondam candle ends or whatever wax I can go for free, as the fluxing results are the same or better with wax, since it can be ignited. The "CleanCast" fluxing chemical compound is designed to be used in an area where smoke or flames are either not tolerable or pose a condom hazard.

    Hope this helps, skilful luck.

Your Frankford Arsenal stuff seems to exist Marvelux in a different label. Yes, it's hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the air), which is why it will rust carbon steel casting pots. Information technology does a number on Lees, but I think the RCBS I accept is stainless, then Marvee or Frankford probably won't injure it. But the same, I'grand not going to try information technology.

Heat your spoon by letting it rest on the edge of the pot or on tiptop of your solid alloy as the pot comes up to temp. That'll boil off the moisture before you stick the spoon in the pot. Fortunately, nosotros don't have to worry about that here. Generally, the atmosphere is too dry out.

My visit from the Tinsel Fairy happened in the same way but the stirring spoon didn't sit over nighttime. I was casting on a humid day and stirred the pot after I added Marvelux. I set the spoon bated and started casting. Sometime later I picked upwards the spoon to stir again and when I put information technology in the pot information technology blew. Tinsel everywhere simply no serious burns.

I checked the spoon later on I had spent virtually 45 minutes or then cleaning lead foil off everything, including me, and it had small droplets of h2o on it again. Marvelux is definitely hygroscopic. I put the can on the shelf and started using candle wax for flux. Eventually the Marvelux rusted thru the metal can.

These days I flux with kitty litter and stir with a wooden stick. A big improvement over Marvelux. Wish I'd known almost kitty litter 40 years ago.

Just an add-on,---even plunging a cold cast ladel into the alloy can give y'all the same effect, it is usually just not equally vehement!

When my pot gets up to temp I balance my stirring spoon on superlative of the molten lead to get information technology upwardly to temp and eliminate whatever moisture that may have been absorbed into the crud that is cooked on there.

    Some elementary safety advice

Most of us know the basics, simply accidents inadvertently happen. Ladles should be preheated as well as spoons or anything else that is to be poked into the molten metallic. Ingots should be preheated and equally such a pair of pliers (slipjaw) used to concur them when calculation them to the melt. I keep a aluminum pie plate handy for catching drips and then use it to cover the pot-held at a camber in my favor/away from me to protect me if there is some bubbling, spattering or other disturbance that occurs for whatsoever the reason. Gloves (welders preferred) and center protection are a given and a welders apron is a expert thought too. This protective equipment is reasonably priced in HF. I have used diverse things to flux with, including Marvelux; it works well. I apply a spoon to sprinkle some of it on and non much is needed. It should be stirred on the surface first and not pushed under it. I use the pie plate to be certain. merely in case. "One time bitten or burned....twice shy", as the saying goes. Its a good idea to proceed ladles and spoons crud gratuitous; scrape them with an old screwdriver or bear upon them to a wire bicycle regularly. Wood sticks/painters sticks are good fluxers, but make sure that they're dry and sap free; a little while in the oven at 200 degrees will practise it. Be safe and enjoy casting. LLS

    Smile

Poking a rusty ladle or other utensil down in the lead will cause some popping and splattering equally the moisture in the rust boils.

I gave up on all of the marvelflux type stuff a long time ago, and went to just a clean dry stick or dowl. Scrapes all the edges, chars the stick/dowl, so at that place is a carbon factor, and for me I works, is cheap and fast.
